Food Review: Chooks to Go

FOOD RATING: 5/5

from Chooks to Gos Facebook Profile

from Chooks to Go's Facebook Profile

Apologies for not providing an actual photo of the product. Why bother take a photo when I can just grab this delightful chicken treat and put it inside my mouth?

Chooks-to-Go is a brand from Bounty Fresh, a known manufacturer of products like chicken. It has taken its chicken product to a higher level by producing the oven-cooked Chooks-to-Go.

Part of Chooks-to-Go’s slogan is eating it bare, meaning, without the sauce. True enough, there is no need for any condiment since this product is as good as it is.

My dad, who is extremely choosy with food he eats, now defines “lechong manok” as “Chooks” since it instantly became his favorite. He spread the word to the family and everyone’s enjoying this chicken treat at times.

Without the need for sarsa (sauce), I didn’t bother finding a saucer and pour massive amounts of sauce (I sometimes feed on sauce alone) to go with my chicken. The roasted chicken is so tasty even on the inside. I can see the flavor well-distributed, and the skin (oh cholesterol!) well-roasted. A typical lechong manok would have burned portions.

Pam and I have been talking about joining the Chooks-to-Go contest and even thinking of how to spend the proceeds shoud we win. We heard that there’s a contest. The mechanics are here.

Anyway, Chooks is the best roasted chicken I’ve tasted by far. Sadly there aren’t any branch here in Makati. Los Baños has two. I’d like to spread this word to everyone so that there will be branches in Makati and other areas.

I give this treat a perfect five.

Ang alam ko wala pang outlets sa Makati while Los Banos has two. I’m not sure if they have stalls sa malls though.

My wife swears by Chooks to Go, and she’s from Baliuag!

I haven’t tried Chooks, however, so I can’t say which is better. I can say that I do prefer lechon manok from Bali_ag as opposed to Ando_s, because of the flavor and juiciness of the chicken.

Now, for the bad news, our neighbor swears at Chooks to Go. Just her luck, the her first experience with Chooks last night was at the branch in Pasig between Vargas Bridge and Pasig rotonda. They chopped the chicken up and bagged it for her. When she got home 15 minutes later and untied the bag on the counter, they noticed rancid smell. Sure enough, it was the chicken – panis na. 20 minutes more saw them back at the Chooks branch, complaining that the chicken sold them was bad. They were thoroughly ignored by the staff until our neighbor dragged a policeman from the nearby outpost over to hear her complaint (trust me, you do NOT want to see this girl pissed!). The staff reluctantly replaced her chicken with a “fresh” one.

Ultimately, this issue is one for the City Health Office and Chooks to Go management to work out, but be warned, just cause it’s hot on the outside doesn’t mean it’s truly safe / healthy on the inside.

To be fair, it could happen to anyone. I’ve seen pics of newly bought S_R cakes with mold on the inside!

ps – If someone from Chooks to Go management would like more details, pls contact me at the email listed.

  15. January 28, 2010 at 6:22 pm

    Hi Lito,

Thanks for the warning. I was also unfortunate to buy a “hilaw” lechong manok before from the ‘Pambansang Lechon Manok’ and since then I was on a quest to find the best chicken.

I am not sure whether Chooks branches are through franchise or not. If the branch is on franchise, it is the branch’s shortcoming for having such untrained people. The same goes with other products. If they do not guarantee their products to be fresh and safe, then eventually they will lose patrons.

I’ve been trying to find a way to contact Chooks management regarding my guests’ queries, and rest assured that if they reach me, I’ll show our comment. Thanks and more power :)

Di ko nagustuhan ang timpla at lalo na ang sauce…..P.S. if na may hiring kayo..mag aaply me sa company niyo sa Bounty Fresh.Branch of Barangay Sabang, Calbayog City, Samar.

    Update on Chooks…

Apparently, the cooking system could be the problem.

The retail Chooks outlet receives partially cooked chickens from the “commissary” operations. These are kept in a cooler (note: not a ref or freezer, but only a cooler that may or may not have enough ice to maintain the proper temp) until needed. They are then placed in the oven/heater for final browning & heating. This doesn’t seem as thorough a cooking system as the “watch it cook all the way” rotisserie systems in Bali_ag / Ando_s / Sr. Ped_os or even Kenn_ Roge_s.

I might recommend using meat thermometers and / or pretested heating charts to produce safer, higher quality products.

  19. February 15, 2010 at 11:24 am

Hi, just a disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Chooks to Go or any of its promoters/marketing specialists. I’m also just a fan who happened to have known a person working on the Chooks ad. :)

@lito – I don’t know why you speak so authoritatively about Chooks to Go. There is no commissary. All chickens are cooked from a raw state inside the store. Just take some time and observe.

I have to say Chooks-To-Go has the most delicious roasted chicken I ever tasted. There’s only one branch here in our town and I keep coming back to their store to buy their best roasted chicken every now and then. Thanks for the delicious chicken!
