Brown and Boring

October 12, 2008

Come September 2008, the Municipality ng Los Banos released an ordinance prohibiting the distribution of plastic bags in all LB stores. So now we use brown paperbags instead.

I was there when Mayor Perez declared the provisions in the ordinance, that unless the goods are wet (meat, vegetables, etc), brown paperbags should be used. It’s fair enough, or so I thought.

I’ve had several trips to Robinson’s Town Mall and one major factor that hinders me from buying a lot is the use of brown paperbags. Last month I bought four thick masking tapes at Handyman and in less than five steps from the store, my brown paperbag broke, leaving me with no choice but to hold each masking tape until I got home.

Yesterday I bought a pair of shoes and I asked the salesman to be considerate enough not to put my shoes inside a brown paperbag (with the shoebox) because it’s too much to handle. But the poor salesman cannot hand me a handy plastic bag because it’s against the law. I told him I might as well not buy the shoes since I was also carrying a big brown paperbag containing my month’s groceries. But I bought the shoes and carried all my brown paperbagged stuff home.

Before I thought it was way cool to carry brown paperbags. It’s so Hollywood. In movies, it looks to okay for the actors to carry big brown paperbags. It’s just so Hollywood. But when I was carrying mine yesterday, hey now, it’s NOT cool.

I looked for earth-friendly shopping bags yesterday but all to no avail. Has LB forgotten that shopping bags are way earth friendlier than brown paperbags? Just how many trees are yadda yadda.

I am not against this earth-friendly move. I just hope to find earth-friendlier shopping bags so I won’t be collecting torn brown and boring paperbags at home.

And that is one good reason to buy reusable shopping bags instead! :D :D

sana yung washable bag yung pinapagamit like the ones here in manila when we go grocery shopping you just bring the bag made from canvas.

  3. Sheenah Says:

@jungzx: true! I just hope to find a decent one here in LB. Otherwise luluwas pa ako

  4. Sheenah Says:

@paul: I hope may ganan din dito. It’s more convenient kaya, diba? =)

    @Perry, er, Sheenah:
Most department stores have na. I bought at SM eh. Ewan ko lang kung meron sa Rob. Goodluck. :)
That way you can avoid brown paper bags. Haha.

Paper bags are extremely more environmental friendly than plastic bags. Plastic bags require millions of barrels of oil each year for production, in addition to the fact that most, if not all plastic bags are made overseas. AND there is no market for recycling plastic bags. Plastic bags do not get recycled – they end up in a landfill, where they take nearly 1000 years to decompose. Paper, on the other hand, can be recycled up to 8 times, and there is a huge market for recycled paper. Also, paper is biodegradable, only taking roughly 6-8 months to decompose. Plastic bags are also major killers of marine life, as they mistake the plastic bag litter for jellyfish and other prey. So overall, your reasons for not liking paper bags are extremely shallow and uneducated. Please do some research next time before you espouse your opinions to the public.

You are missing my point, mister. I have nothing against paperbags, except that they are not durable. What I am pointing out is that, reusable shopping bags are way better than disposable paperbags. So next time you read and comment somebody else’s entry, analyze.

  8. Sheenah Says:

@jungzx: the green bags? I was close to buying the off-white shopping bag from Shopwise but then it’s too small.I think LB sells green bags, too, but I just couldn’t find any anymore.

So nakiki-uso na sa mga earth friendly cities ang elbi ah? haha. Ayus sana kung mga magagaan lang angilalagay doon eh. Kaso ayon na din sa’yo, nadaling masira. And yeah, reusable shopping “bags” should be made available for the public’s convenience. =)

  10. Sheenah Says:

yeah. LB, the Science and Nature City. kaso nga lang may stores na kahit basang basa na ang binili mo, sa paper parin nilalagay. Dapat gandahan siguro nila ang reusable shopping bag para mas ma-motivate ang mga tao, and dapat din it should be available everywhere. Kahit sa stores.

  11. anti shallow Says:

duh. meron kaya sa rob na cloth bag. 100+. sa waltermart 35 lang.you make it sound like you have no choice at all and that brown paper bags are a major problem.

  12. Sheenah Says:

Since was that? I only saw cloth bags weeks after my greatest shopping mishap. And I don’t shop at Walter Mart. I do not make brown paper bags sound like a major problem anymore. I got three reusable bags, for crying out loud.

And by the way, anonymity is not my thing. =P

  13. Gab Says:

What if the paper bag is colored with your favorite color, say “BLACK,” am I right?; and printed on it is a picture of your favorite actor, would you still oppose such ordinance?

  14. Sheenah Says:

HOY GAB. At pati dito nakarating ka! Haha!

I don’t think providing “BLACK” paperbags with my favorite actor is such a practical idea for store owner pero kung si Gerard Butler ba naman nakalagay, then WHY NOT, diba? ;p

Yes, I ranted in October 2008 so medyo matagal na. Might I rant again?

Oo na, shameless plug hahaha. Sige sige. (edited this post)
